There’s this picture story book that my not-so-little munchkin still has me reading five years since we started. It’s about a regular Joe (quite the character, that Mr Frumble). Like most of us. He lives a run-of-the-mill kind of life. Like the rest of us. A humdrum existence. Only today, even before he wakes up, there’s more to his day than meets the eye. Just like some of our days. Mr Frumble lives in Busytown. Nairobi, Kampala or Toronto – Busytown could just as well be anywhere you scratch out a living. When the sun comes up, everyone is up and about. So is Mr Frumble. Only today all that could possibly go wrong is happening. In real time. From burned toast and spilled coffee to getting his car smashed. And the mechanic, Mr Fixit, doesn’t help matters: Mr Frumble’s sausage car morphs into a pickle. Instead of cutting his hair, the barber cut Mr Frumble’s tie into two. Mr Frumble goes shopping at day’s end, only he forgot his wallet at home. Then he goes home to the stressful sound of the smoke alarm when his dinner is ready, and a flooded house after washing the dishes. It didn’t rain today. It poured. Just like many of our days. On days like this, we would do well to remember the wisdom of Nahum, the minor prophet (with a major message): 1. God is good. 2. He is a hiding place in tough times. 3. He recognizes and welcomes anyone looking for help (no matter how desperate the trouble).
