At the end of dinner last night, as we were doing admin for today, I was reminded it was my turn to do #Sunday lunch. Without any due acknowledgement, I sidestepped the matter to say how I needed to compensate for a day I missed running over the past week. I suppose I was hoping for some sympathy. It didn’t come. Instead, my daughter offered to “support” me on my run. And running through the freezing drizzle we have, this morning.
Now for the present conundrum (am not quite up to the task;-). Am thinking many things. For one, I could just take the girls out for lunch – they would love that very much, only Mona (who’s away) would hear of this domestic chicanery. But then again, it would be a most excellent opportunity to give the girls an education on Specialization, which catalyzed the Industrial Revolution: When the farmer came to the critical realization that he needn’t have to bake his own bread, and weave his own clothes, life became a lot easier – folks focused on their core competencies. Then there is the wisdom of Solomon’s last line in Ecclesiastes (chapter 10, verse 19;-). I could also throw that one in. Let’s see.

The industrial revolution benefited industrialists.. not farmers.. this specialization model sucks.
November 9, 2019 at 9:09 pm
The Agricultural revolution was an accomplice… no doubt… the way out of this exploitative marriage…. as farmers…. is to embrace value addition at the farm level…. that means… milling maize…. packing milk….

And it created the inevitable: middle men in an already duplicitous value chain. But do remember that the Agricultural Revolution of the 1700’s is what paved the way for the Industrial Revolution. Not only that, the 1800’s also saw a spike in agricultural production to feed the new industries. So yes (like many things), it was both a boon and a bane, Andrew;-)
November 9, 2019 at 9:20 pm
Nail on the head, Andrew, optimizing the value chain!
November 9, 2019 at 9:20 pm
