I slept in this morning and woke up to find my teenage daughter in a corner of the house, engrossed in reading. She was finishing up Hope Babigumira’s book. Patience Kwizera gave it to her a while back. Once she was done, the curious and protective dad I am, I made it my Sunday reading. (I got onto instagram for the sole reason of “checking up” on my daughter. Too much? Yeah.) “No Makeup On,” is a tell-all candid fireside chat. It is a call to hope and rediscovery for every girl whose identity has been snatched away from her; a reminder that we all have extraordinary in our DNA. Reading the book as a father, I have been reminded that even on the quietest of days like today (sitting down with my daughter as I type this), am modeling Father God and what her significant relationships will be. A father’s influence in his daughter’s life shapes her self-esteem, self-image, confidence and, for better or for worse, her opinion of men.
