To all my Christian friends who are throwing around Romans 13 (a passage on submission to governing authorities) as justification for remaining stone silent in the face of injustice, just a little word of instruction: God’s Word must never be read in isolation; it’s not an exercise in cherry picking! That chapter must be read in the light (and context) of EVERYTHING the Bible says about civil government. The false doctrine of the “divine right of kings” is based on ignoring the numerous Old Testament provisions addressing civil government, and also not reading Romans 13 in its entirety. The passage actually says that the one in authority is God’s servant for y(our) good, and if we are “good” we have no cause to fear them; but if we do “evil” we do have cause to fear them. According to scripture, rulers are not autonomous but are equally under the law, and are accountable to a higher power (God) and the people they serve. Out of this relationship between God, the leader and the people, arises the people’s obligation to protest lawlessness on the part of the leader. If they don’t protest, the people will suffer for going along with the unlawful acts of the leader. Lopsided theology has been the chief perpetrator of so much of the grief and evil that the world has witnessed!

Well you stole the words out of my head and did not even credit me. Isoright ?? Reminds me of another heavily abused line; “touch not my annointed” when it’s used to mean “do not question the man of God!”

Lol Prince, and don’t get me started on that other one. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof;-)

No scripture exists in isolation. And the end result of any scriptural text is always redemption and not fear.

Redemption, not fear. Truth spoken, Derrick!

I agree with you brother Jacob Zikusooka. This is right. Very well put?
Let us pray that God will save us from this selfish and dehumanizing form of governance. We are paying the price dearly for keeping our mouths closed and this has just begun. We can not keep in our “comfort zones”. God help us!
I was thinking through the life of Jeremiah. And from Chapter 16, the Bible gives a clear perspective into his life. He was not to marry. Because Israelites would be taken into captivity in his(Jeremiah’s) time. It was better for him not to marry than marry, have children and all the children and family perish as captives in Babylon.
V4, ” They shall die gruesome deaths; they shall not be lamented nor shall they be buried, but they shall be like refuse on the face of the earth. They shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, and their corpses shall be meat for the birds of heaven and for the beasts of the earth “. (NJKV).
There is disaster! Our children will be asking us why we would be silent Christians(that is if we remain silent on these issues) and see our nation tumble down as it is now. This could be some captivity of a sort(that’s why I thought of Jeremiah’s life).
We need to pray

Absolutely, my brother, Peterson! When Jesus calls us to be His witnesses in “Judea and Samaria,” and to the ends of the earth, His ask is for more than a tear-jerking testimony or even a three-point 30 minute rehearsed sermon. He’s asking us to stick our necks out! We should be drawn to what is true and what is right because that is the character of God. Dietrich Bonhoeffer (the anti-Nazi dissident who was martyred in a concentration camp) put it well: “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.” The deafening silence of church leaders and christians is most saddening. Where are the righteous? Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act. Staying neutral is NOT biblical!
